Zhejiang Provincial Tongde Hospital，directly under the Bureau of Health of Zhejiang Province, is a modern , sizeable, class A tertiary hospital characterized by the combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western Medicine. The hospital was consolidated from former Zhejiang Second Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Zhejiang Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Zhejiang Institute of Mental Health in July, 2000. The full name of the hospital is “Zhejiang Provincial Tongde Hospital, Zhejiang Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Zhejiang Institute of Mental Health”.
The hospital currently has three medical sections named Cuiyuan (the headqaurters), Tianmushanlu and Maocaoshan with total land areas of 560 Mu (i.e. 373 thousand square meters).The hospital now has nearly 1000 staff, 580 of whom professionals and more than 130 of whom possess advanced professional qualifications. There are 9 professionals obtaining the reputation of famous Traditional Chinese Medicine at State or Provincial levels, and 19 experts are awarded special governmental stipends by Chinese State Council. The hospital provides a full and wide range of medical services by the various clinical departments including more than 40 clinic departments and more than 20 specialists programs in the clinic. The main clinic departments include internal medicine (in TCM and western medicine), cardiovascular diseases, nephropathy, rheumatic & immunological diseases, neurology, respiration, digestive disease, geriatrics, oncology, hematology, gynecology (both in TCM and western medicine), pediatrics(both in TCM and western medicine), orthopaedics and injury(both in TCM and western medicine), general surgery，neurosurgery，urinary surgery，anorectal diseases, mastopathy, dermatology(both in TCM and western medicine), ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, stomatology, acupuncture, Chinese massage, endocrinology, sexual transmitted diseases, hepatology, obstetrics, forensic psychiatry, psychological consultation, child psychological consultation, sexual psychology, insomnia , neurosis, dementia, psychodynamics. The annual emergency and ordinary hospital visits have reached 600,000 person-times while the hospitalization has reached 7,000 person-times. Tongde Hospital is well equipped with many advanced medical facilities such as MRI, Spiral CT, etc. The hospital owns 96120 Ambulance First Aid Care Center providing 24 hour basis emergency services. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the hospital guarantees the reliable and monitoring intensive care for the patients with their emergent and crisis stages. The hospital has established 12 wards with a total of 460 beds. In addition, a considerable, well equipped and fully functional Second Clinic is set up by the hospital in the Tianmushanlu Section where the highly quality medical services for patients are provided by the specialist programs and various clinic departments. Zhejiang Academy of TCM has been established for 45 years. With its solid strength in research in TCM , the academy has become a leading institutions in the fields of research in TCM in Zhejiang province and provides substantial support for strategy of “strengthening the hospital by means of science and education” in the hospital. A total of 85 research programs has been performed in the recent three years, among which one program is national levels and 19 programs are provincial or ministry levels. A total of 19 programs has passed the fruit identification and recognition successively including one the Second Prize of Provincial Progress in Sciences and Technology, three the Third Prize of Provincial Progress in Sciences and Technology and two the First Prize of Provincial Creation in TCM. Additionally, the hospital has also developed more than 70 programs through trans-sectional and trans-institutional research creating 6 new medications based on TCM. The Oncology in TCM, Digest, Psychiatry, Medical Literature Study in TCM, Emergency Medicine in combination of TCM and Western Medicine and Acupuncture in the hospital have been listed as the key and priority developing subjects in the province. Moreover, two learned periodical, Zhejiang Journal of TCM and Health Preserving are published monthly by the academy. Zhejiang Institute of Mental Health is the preventive and research center in fields of mental health in the province with long term aims at studying in psychiatric disorders, senile dementia and drug abuse. Some clinical work and research in schizophrenia, depression, obsessive compulsive disorders, senile dementia, drug abuse and dependence as well as child psychological disorders have reached advanced levels in the country. After the merger, mental health has been emphasized and strengthened. The possibility of preventing and treating psychiatric disorders by TCM as well as combination of TCM and Western Medicine is explored. Psychiatric and psychological clinic, dementia and psychosomatic wards are currently opened in the Cuiyuan Section of the hospital and other 3 psychiatric wards as well as a Drug Dependence Treatment and Rehabilitation Center are currently opened in Maocaoshan Section. Furthermore, the hospital is also the Center of Forensic Psychiatry in province-wide.
